Not even a global pandemic can stop the momentum toward building a new Quinte Health Care (QHC) Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH)!

Over the past year, as COVID‐19 continued to monopolize much of the focus for hospitals, our teams have stayed the course behind the scenes diving into the detailed design work needed for attaining approval for the new hospital build. The work required for Stage 3 of the project is now complete, has been approved by the Quinte Health Care Board of Directors, and will be submitted to the Ministry of Health this week.

“The new PECMH will respond to the needs and values of the community, ensuring care close to home for residents of Prince Edward County for generations to come,” explained Stacey Daub, President and CEO, Quinte Health Care. “The new PECMH will play a vital role regionally as part of QHC’s integrated system of four hospitals and also locally, where health care providers are working together to build and develop new models of care to serve their community. Working together means safe, quality patient care for residents across our region and within PECMH’s community.”

Daub expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of the Prince Edward County community, and for the tremendous partnership with the PECMH Foundation, PEC Family Health Team, PECMH Auxiliary, PEC municipal partners, MPP Todd Smith and the Ontario Government.

“Building a new hospital is definitely a marathon, and not a sprint – taking many years of work and planning leading up to construction,” stated Daub. “The support for this project has been relentless and has been the fuel needed to move us forward to this exciting stage.”

The PECMH Foundation continues its vital fundraising efforts to raise the community share of this new leading edge hospital.

“Our small but mighty community of Prince Edward County has proven that when we believe in something and value it highly, we will move mountains to make it happen,” commented Barbara McConnell, Chairperson, PECMH Foundation.

“Today, we are another step closer to seeing a great new hospital in the County. On behalf of the PECMH Foundation Board and staff, our hundreds of donors, and the entire community, thank you to the planning partners and the QHC Board for your dedication to moving the build through the planning process. We are grateful for all the support to Back the Build that we have received from so many.”

QHC anticipates that the Ministry review process will take a few months, with an approval anticipated by late spring, so work on Stage 4 approval requirements can begin.

“If there was ever a time to show support for your new County hospital, it’s now as we take yet another step closer to shovels in the ground,” concluded Daub. “Please Back the Build!”

Background:

In 2014, local health care partners committed to working collaboratively toward building a new hospital in Prince Edward County. QHC PECMH redevelopment planning partners are Quinte Health Care, Prince Edward Family Health Team, Municipality of Prince Edward County, Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

The new Quinte Health Care Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital will be designed to fully align with current codes and the latest infection control standards. The building will total approximately 96,000 square feet and be laid out on two levels. The layout includes key departments such as the emergency department, ambulatory clinics and the inpatient unit co‐located on the first floor. The second floor includes dialysis, administration and mechanical services spaces.

Community Spirit Shines as Bake Off Breaks Fundraising Record PICTON, September 24, 2025 – The sweet smell of success filled the air at the Picton Fair as the 16th annual Bake Off Challenge raised a record-breaking $18,700 for the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation (PECMHF). With more than 50 entries and enthusiastic bidding, the community once again proved that a passion for baking can translate into life-changing support for local health care. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of a digital mammography machine, a critical tool for early breast cancer detection. Since 2007, the Prince Edward Agricultural Society, who host the Bake Off has raised over $64,500 for the hospital. This year’s event included a special one-time memorial apple pie category in honour of the late Deputy Fire Chief Jim Young, who was the inaugural Bake Off winner in 2007 with his unforgettable apple pie. A total of 26 apple pies were entered in his honour, raising an incredible $8,250 on their own. Jim’s parents, Colleen and Murray, and daughters, Dahnon and Kendyl, were present to celebrate his legacy. Entries were judged by Ken Menlove, a local lawyer; Jordan Smart with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Auxiliary Unit; Mike Roy, a community member; and Chris Malette, MP for Bay of Quinte. The auction produced plenty of highlights. Firefighter Autumn Benlap’s Caramel Apple Spice Cheesecake topped the apple pie category and sold to Dr. Sarah Waterston, and Elizabeth Lodge’s Lemon Cream Pie, named best overall pie, sold to Herman Prinzen. “The Bake Off is more than a fundraiser — it’s a celebration of community spirit and generosity,” said Shannon Coull, executive director of the PECMH Foundation. “This year’s proceeds will support the purchase of a new digital mammography machine for the new County hospital, and we are so grateful to every baker, bidder, and volunteer who made that possible.” “The Bake Off has become a highlight of the Picton Fair, and it’s inspiring to see how much it has grown,” said Susan Harrington, president of the Picton Fair Board. “The generosity of our community never ceases to amaze us. Thank you to everyone who baked, bid, or volunteered to make this year such a success.” The Agricultural Society also expressed its gratitude to the many individuals and local businesses who made the event possible. “There’s something truly special about seeing friends, neighbours, and businesses come together over pies and cakes to support health care,” said Nancy Parks, Back the Build campaign chairperson. “This event proves that even the simplest of traditions can make a lasting impact on our community.” The Foundation is proud of its longstanding partnership with the Agricultural Society and looks forward to welcoming everyone back to next year’s Picton Fair. The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation is a charitable organization dedicated to raising funds to advance health care for the people of Prince Edward County and patients of the hospital.
