Spring at PECMHF

By Briar Boyce

When this is published, March will be coming in like a lamb…or a lion. The worst of the winter should be behind us; the rivers are beginning to run, the sap is flowing, and the earth is waking up from its long winter nap. Spring is on the horizon!

Spring has always been a busy time for the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation (PECMHF) team as we close off our current fiscal year on March 31 and welcome a new fundraising year.

Spring is also an industrious time with many fundraising activities that benefit the hospital being hosted in our community. PECMHF is blessed to have a calendar full of events this spring!

We are excited to revive the Bid for the Build art auction on Saturday, June 1. Bid for the Build is your opportunity to participate in an elegant evening at the historic Crystal Palace, mix with collectors and art lovers, and bid on significant artworks by professional artists in our exciting live and silent auctions. Tickets ($50.00 each) go on sale March 1, and information can be found online at www.pecmhf.ca/bid-for-the-build.

Another third-party event benefiting our hospital includes March Maple Madness. Donation jars will be available at participating sugar shacks and businesses throughout the month, encouraging attendees to Back the Build for the new hospital. For participating venues, visit https://www.pecmarchmaplemadness.ca/.

While we’re thinking about maple, Wellington Rotary is again selling maple syrup for $20.00 (750 ml bottle), with proceeds supporting the purchase of a ventilator needed at our hospital. Limited quantities are available by contacting y.buys@utoronto.ca.

On Friday, March 8, get ready to rock and roll at The County Rocks, a concert at Mount Tabor Playhouse that'll have you dancing, singing, and raising funds for PECMHF. You won’t want to miss out on this incredible evening with live performances from local bands. From classic rock to modern hits, there is something for everyone. The County Guys Real Estate Group is hosting their second annual community skate and chuck-a-puck fundraiser on Saturday, March 9, from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Wellington and District Community Centre. Come by for a free skate, buy a puck for $10.00, and chuck your puck for a chance to win the $2,000.00 grand prize! All puck sales will support PECMHF.

You can keep up with our upcoming events by visiting our website at https://www.pecmhf.ca/events or by signing up for our e-newsletter by emailing Jess at jjacklin@qhc.on.ca.

With so many fundraisers underway, sharing information that may help those considering hosting an event for the hospital feels timely. Here are some tips to help you get started.

A third-party event is an activity that is planned and executed by an outside party to raise money for an organization. The revenue raised, minus expenses is then donated to a charity like PECMHF.

Events are important to us. They can provide a fun, inclusive and exciting way to raise money and brand awareness for the foundation.

The first thing we recommend you do is to reach out to us. By letting us know your intentions early, we can work with you to make sure the timing of your event is appropriate, help set clear expectations, answer questions, and help promote your event.

PECMHF must approve events where our name and logo are to be used. This assures the public that the foundation will receive the money they give to your fundraiser. We can also help determine whether the funds you raise qualify for a tax receipt. The Canada Revenue Agency governs registered charities, and we must adhere to laws regarding issuing a charitable receipt. This is why it is best to check with us to see if your activity qualifies for issuing receipts before you promise them to your attendees.

By including us early on, we can share our third-party event kit (link below), filled with lots of information to help make your fundraising event a success!

The foundation needs you and your energy to ensure our new hospital will have the resources to deliver the high-quality care for which PECMH is known. We can also do the following:

·      Provide you with our logo and brand identity manual.

·      Help promote your event through social media and on our website.

·      Help you announce and celebrate the results of all your hard work after your event concludes and the funds are donated to the foundation.

If organizing a third-party event isn’t for you, we hope you’ll watch our social media pages for opportunities to attend an event that benefits our hospital.

To access our third-party event kit, visit www.pecmhf.ca/host-an-event or call us at 613-476-1008 ext. 4507 for more information.

The Rotary Club of Picton has once again demonstrated its long-standing dedication to strengthening local healthcare by presenting a $5,000 donation to the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) Foundation in support of the Back the Build campaign. The contribution represents funds raised through several Rotary-led community initiatives, including their annual Rotary Golf Tournament , the Waterfalls Tour , Rotary Cash Calendars and the Lilac Ride . These events continue to play a significant role in ensuring the Foundation meets our $30M Back the Build campaign goal for the new PECMH. For more than 23 years, the Rotary Club of Picton has been a steadfast partner in improving healthcare in PEC—contributing close to $225,000 to date. This includes a generous $100,000 pledge toward Back the Build campaign that was fulfilled in 2023. These funds help to ensure the new hospital is equipped with the modern tools and technology needed to serve patients today and for generations to come. “The Rotary Club of Picton has a deep and enduring commitment to community service, and supporting our hospital is a natural extension of that mission,” said J.J. Johnston, Rotary Club of Picton President. “We are proud to continue contributing to a project that will have a lasting impact on everyone in Prince Edward County.” “We are grateful for Rotary’s leadership, generosity, and community spirit,” said Shannon Coull, Executive Director, PECMH Foundation. “Their ongoing support of this campaign helps ensure our new hospital will provide the high-quality care our community deserves. Rotary truly embodies what it means to give back to the County.” The PECMH Foundation extends its sincere thanks to the Rotary Club of Picton for their support of local healthcare and their thoughtful contribution toward building and equipping the new hospital.
