Young Girl Donates Yard Sale Proceeds to Back the Build

PICTON, July 9, 2021

It’s not every day that a seven-year-old cleans out their closet and decides to hold a yard sale – not to mention a fundraiser.

That’s exactly what Sadie Adams of Ameliasburgh did earlier in July! Sadie gathered up her toys, books, and shoes and set up shop at her grandmother’s house on Queen Street in Picton. Her goal: to sell her wares and raise money for the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Back the Build campaign.

Motivated by a family members’ battle with cancer, Sadie felt compelled to help everyone who requires care at their ‘hometown hospital’.

For many, garage sales are a way to sell items they no longer need. For Sadie, this was a way she could give back in a meaningful way; to help build a new hospital in Prince Edward County.

Sadie raised $90.00 at her yard sale and presented her earnings to Shannon Coull, executive director of the PECMH Foundation on Friday. Thanks to the Paul B. Helliwell Foundation, Sadie’s donation will be matched 2 to 1.

“Sadie is an inspiration and a bright light for our staff, patients, their families and our entire community,” said Coull. “We are so grateful for all of her hard work and support that will help make our dream of building a new hospital a reality. Sadie is a shining example of philanthropy in action.”

Sadie’s mother Jennifer Kainz said the family was thrilled with the support from everyone who visited the yard sale. “They were very generous. We want to extend a big thank you to them. I am also very proud that she used her time to do something so special for our new hospital.”
