CT Scanner Coming to PECMH

By Shannon Coull, CFRE

In 2021, patients from Prince Edward County (PEC) required a CT scan at another Quinte Healthcare Corporation (QHC) hospital close to 2,600 times. The reason for having to leave The County for a CT scan is that Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) doesn’t have one, in fact it never has. BUT, that is all about to change.

The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation (PECMHF) recently announced that $20,700,000 has been raised for the new hospital build in PEC. These funds will be used to cover our community’s local share of 10% of the cost of building the hospital. These funds will not only help to cover the cost of the bricks and mortar and furnishings, the funds will also help to cover the additional cost of an increase in the size of the hospital to accommodate expanded services.

As a result of our community’s generous support, we were positioned to submit a request for a CT scanner. QHC quickly responded and advocated on our behalf to bring a CT scanner to our hospital. The Ministry of Health approved QHC’s request to include plans for a CT scanner in the new hospital design.

A computerized tomography (CT) scan combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles around your body and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images (slices) of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues inside your body. A CT scan is a minimally invasive way to capture images that provide more-detailed information than plain X-rays do.

CT scans are used for emergency imaging done for falls, strokes, cardiac issues and trauma and are able to quickly diagnosis brain bleeds, blood clots in the lungs, aortic dissections, strokes, abdominal perforations, appendicitis and surgical planning.

CT scanners also help for early detection and continued monitoring of cancer as well as early detection of blockages in the vessels of the neck that may cause neurological issues if not diagnosed.

There are several other important uses for a CT scanner and the bottom line is that this is an incredible addition to the services that will be delivered to our community as a result of our new hospital campaign.

We have raised the funds needed to build the hospital, and now we need to raise the funds required to purchase major medical equipment, like the CT scanner!

“Last year (2023), we had the best crop yields since moving to The County in 2004. Barbara and I wanted to share our gratitude over such a great harvest and couldn’t think of a better way to do so than to donate to a cause benefitting all…building a new hospital,” said Hunter.
