I Love The County

By Briar Boyce

Whether you live here, once lived here or come to visit, each of us has a different experience that makes Prince Edward County special. Perhaps your love of The County is rooted in the past. Maybe you fell in love with The County’s charisma on a recent visit. Perhaps you hope to one day make this place your home.

An essential factor in feeling “at home” here is knowing that we have access to a modern hospital close to home that carries a tradition of exceptional care. Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital’s (PECMH) history is grounded in that it passed down from the first hospital on Picton’s Hill Street to the current one, and it will be passed down to the new hospital when it opens in 2027.

Our new hospital will continue to be staffed with skilled and dedicated healthcare professionals, whom we affectionately refer to as our Care Champions. I am proud to Back the Build to help guarantee that the next generation that chooses to make The County home or comes to visit has every opportunity to work, play and be cared for in their own backyard.

It takes a village to get the exceptional care PECMH has become known for. Not only does it take hospital staff, but it takes the family members and visitors who come to help lift the spirits of a loved one. And it takes our donors; without all of you, there would be no hospital.

Prince Edward County is YOUR County, and this hospital is YOUR hospital. This is why all of us are being given the opportunity to be a part of this campaign. Regardless of the size, every donation will have an impact. And more importantly, every single donor will have a sense of pride and ownership when we break ground this summer.

What we do would not be possible without you, our donors and stakeholders, and your vested interest in our local healthcare system. By providing the Care Champions working at PECMH with equipment and investing in our new hospital, we ensure our medical professionals have the tools to do their jobs in a modern facility, keeping care close to home.

If the Care Champions working in our hospital couldn’t access leading-edge medical devices, patients would have to travel to other facilities to receive care.

The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation’s (PECMHF) mission is to ensure every one of our County residents and visitors has access to the care you need.

Quinte Health’s leadership team and Board of Directors play a critical role in delivering health care across our region. They set the plan for the four interdependent hospitals, ensuring, through a rigorous planning process, that equipment needs for each hospital are prioritized. This process helps guide the foundations in fundraising accordingly and makes sure the highest priorities for each hospital are met.

A lot goes on behind the scenes at PECMHF. We each have our roles, but we work with Quinte Health as one team to provide exceptional care to the hospital's patients. That’s where your donations come in!

Investing in our County hospital ensures our future hospital will continue to provide services, including:

·       20 inpatient beds with design potential for up to 23

·       24/7 emergency department

·       Acute inpatient unit supported by physicians within the Prince Edward Family Health Team

·       Inpatient pharmacy

·       Satellite hemodialysis unit

·       Ambulatory care, including clinics, medical day care, endoscopy, and medical device reprocessing

·       Diagnostic imaging including CT scanner, x-ray, ultrasound, mammography, and cardio-diagnostics

·       Central laboratory

·       Efficient access to other Quinte Health Care hospitals, secondary care in Belleville and tertiary care in Kingston

·       New helipad

The hospital foundation is grateful to the many donors, volunteers, and community members who tirelessly support our mission to advance healthcare for the people of Prince Edward County and the hospital’s patients. You are partnering with us to guarantee the future of healthcare in our community remains bright!

From the thousands of patients who enter our doors each year to our Care Champions who provide exceptional care in our hospital, the impact of your generosity is felt every day, and for that, we are grateful. The entire team at PECMHF wants you to know how thankful we are for your support.

No matter your age, whether you live in The County permanently, are a seasonal homeowner or are a visitor, there are two things we all have in common: we all love The County, and we all feel safer knowing we have access to a hospital that provides exceptional healthcare, close to home.

Rock for a Reason Raises $26,000 for Mammography Equipment at PECMH
March 20, 2026
The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) Foundation is proud to recognize the generosity of Brandon and Hailey Pounder, co-owners of Pounder’s Pub & Patio, who hosted the first annual Pounder Polar Plunge on February 1. Held at Pounder’s Pub & Patio in Wellington, the event brought together community members, local hockey teams including the Wellington Dukes and County Royals, and spectators for a fun and meaningful day in support of local causes. Close to 40 participants took the plunge with a $20 entry fee, while attendees enjoyed a community BBQ donated by the County Royals. The event raised $1,000 for the PECMH Foundation’s Back the Build campaign and $1,000 for the Wellington Auxiliary Rescue Association (WARA), supporting both the future of healthcare in Prince Edward County and the vital work of WARA’s volunteer-run marine search and rescue team. “We are incredibly grateful to Brandon and Hailey for their creativity, community spirit, and commitment to making a difference,” said Shannon Coull, executive director of the PECMH Foundation. “Events like the Pounder Polar Plunge not only raise important funds but also build momentum and awareness for local initiatives that matter deeply.” “We started the Polar Plunge to give back to the community we grew up in and bring people together,” said Brandon Pounder, co-owner of Pounder's Pub & Patio. “The support from local teams and residents was incredible, and we’re excited to grow this into an annual event and continue supporting important local causes.” Over the past six years (2020–2025), Quinte Health has recorded 315 emergency department visits related to water incidents at its four hospitals—an average of approximately 53 visits per year across the region. PECMH alone sees an average of 11 such visits annually. “Even one drowning is one too many,” said David McFaul, WARA supervisor. “Water safety is something we can’t take for granted in our region, and it takes awareness, education, and strong community organizations to keep people safe. The Wellington Auxiliary Rescue Association plays a critical role in protecting residents and visitors on our waterways through their dedicated volunteer efforts.” WARA operates as part of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, responding to emergencies across West Lake and Lake Ontario. With a highly trained, all-volunteer crew, the organization plays a critical role in ensuring safety along approximately 125 kilometres of shoreline and 2,400 square kilometres of water. Its operations rely heavily on community support and fundraising efforts. The PECMH Foundation extends its sincere thanks to Brandon and Hailey of Pounder’s Pub & Patio and everyone who participated in or supported the inaugural Pounder Polar Plunge.
