Wellings of Picton surpasses $50K in cumulative giving

PICTON – September 26, 2023 - The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation (PECMHF) has enjoyed a healthy partnership with Wellings of Picton since well before the 55+ residential community was built. From humble beginnings in the little sales office at the corner of Picton’s Main Street at the top of the town hill, the team at Wellings of Picton has always welcomed the hospital foundation into their home.

The members and staff of Wellings of Picton show their generosity and support for Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) in a multitude of ways and recently surpassed $50,000 in cumulative giving to the foundation over the past eight years.

The community-minded employees and members were proud to announce this impactful contribution of $50,000 to PECMHF since 2015 at a reception in the Atrium of Wellings, where members and staff posed for a group photo.

“This is an incredible milestone. It represents 32 contributions, dozens of caring donors, and thousands of lives touched at our County hospital,” said Shannon Coull, executive director of the PECMH Foundation. “These gifts from Wellings help support our hospital’s exceptional Care Champions by providing them with the tools, equipment, and space they need to provide high-quality care for patients and their families. With their support, we can also invest in the resources needed to Back the Build for our new hospital and meet the growing needs of the community we serve.”

The partnership between PECMHF and Wellings started when former General Manager Rachel Henry approached the foundation team, expressing interest in sponsoring upcoming events. The foundation launched a monthly lunch and learn series, and with Wellings of Picton’s support, the Live Well in the County luncheon series was born.

When the lunch and learn series concluded, Wellings of Picton continued to help PECMHF reach its fundraising targets for priority medical equipment by becoming a corporate sponsor of the Teeing Up Fore Health Care golf classic. In addition to their sponsorship, Wellings of Picton provided volunteers to help with hole activities and ensured enough prizes to go around.

We recognize that local, accessible health care is key to a vibrant, thriving community, and we are pleased to be able to support the hospital and the hospital foundation,” said Natalie Tommy, vice president of Nautical Lands Group. “We are incredibly grateful to our employees and members at Wellings of Picton for their ongoing commitment to raising funds and keeping community wellness a top priority.”

Not only does Wellings of Picton show their local hospital all sorts of love, but the members also enthusiastically help when they can. Over the past five years, the members have hosted the Making Spirits Bright holiday bazaar, an indoor market in the Wellings atrium, to help usher in the holiday season. Over the years, some of PECMHF’s longtime donors have moved to Wellings, so it is always fun to see so many of our beloved supporters in one place when we visit, and we meet new friends all the time.

“For us, nothing beats the joy of belonging to such a philanthropic and caring community. We are proud of our partnership with the team at Wellings and their members. We deeply appreciate that our donors who reside at Wellings have access to such a high-quality organization with professional staff and facilities,” said Coull.

Most recently, Wellings hosted their second annual car wash and barbecue. The funds raised through this event propelled them to the Founder level on PECMHF’s donor wall for cumulative gifts of $50,000+.

A naming opportunity in the new hospital is also being explored.

“We understand the significance of contributing to the growth and well-being of the place we call home,” said Tracey Cronkright, general manager of Wellings of Picton. “Our commitment to our community and our local hospital goes beyond business, as we believe in nurturing a strong sense of community and giving back to those who have supported us.”

Thank you, Wellings, for your support with third-party fundraisers and through inspiring sponsorships that help advance health care for the people of Prince Edward County and the hospital's patients. For more information on Wellings of Picton, visit https://www.wellingsofpicton.com/.

The Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital (PECMH) Foundation is proud to recognize the generosity of Brandon and Hailey Pounder, co-owners of Pounder’s Pub & Patio, who hosted the first annual Pounder Polar Plunge on February 1. Held at Pounder’s Pub & Patio in Wellington, the event brought together community members, local hockey teams including the Wellington Dukes and County Royals, and spectators for a fun and meaningful day in support of local causes. Close to 40 participants took the plunge with a $20 entry fee, while attendees enjoyed a community BBQ donated by the County Royals. The event raised $1,000 for the PECMH Foundation’s Back the Build campaign and $1,000 for the Wellington Auxiliary Rescue Association (WARA), supporting both the future of healthcare in Prince Edward County and the vital work of WARA’s volunteer-run marine search and rescue team. “We are incredibly grateful to Brandon and Hailey for their creativity, community spirit, and commitment to making a difference,” said Shannon Coull, executive director of the PECMH Foundation. “Events like the Pounder Polar Plunge not only raise important funds but also build momentum and awareness for local initiatives that matter deeply.” “We started the Polar Plunge to give back to the community we grew up in and bring people together,” said Brandon Pounder, co-owner of Pounder's Pub & Patio. “The support from local teams and residents was incredible, and we’re excited to grow this into an annual event and continue supporting important local causes.” Over the past six years (2020–2025), Quinte Health has recorded 315 emergency department visits related to water incidents at its four hospitals—an average of approximately 53 visits per year across the region. PECMH alone sees an average of 11 such visits annually. “Even one drowning is one too many,” said David McFaul, WARA supervisor. “Water safety is something we can’t take for granted in our region, and it takes awareness, education, and strong community organizations to keep people safe. The Wellington Auxiliary Rescue Association plays a critical role in protecting residents and visitors on our waterways through their dedicated volunteer efforts.” WARA operates as part of the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, responding to emergencies across West Lake and Lake Ontario. With a highly trained, all-volunteer crew, the organization plays a critical role in ensuring safety along approximately 125 kilometres of shoreline and 2,400 square kilometres of water. Its operations rely heavily on community support and fundraising efforts. The PECMH Foundation extends its sincere thanks to Brandon and Hailey of Pounder’s Pub & Patio and everyone who participated in or supported the inaugural Pounder Polar Plunge.
